Challenges Facing Higher Education in 2021
A Survey of College and University Chief Academic Officers
In March 2021, Inside Higher Ed partnered with Hanover Research to interview college and university provosts and chief academic officers in order to understand how they view some of the challenges facing higher education institutions in 2021.
The survey found 77% of provosts indicated that student academic engagement was at least somewhat worse during the fall semester, while 83% indicated they felt the quality of the courses remained good. As the world still grapples with the impact of COVID-19, respondents discussed the challenges faced when it comes to:
- Quality of course offerings
- Student and faculty engagement
- Hybrid and online courses in the future
- Policy and curriculum changes
